A Day in Doha

Whether you’ve come to Doha to experience what Qatar has to offer or you’re just stopping in for a layover, I have put together a guide for a day in Doha. As a female solo traveler, I felt just as safe in Doha as I do in the States. I would recommend women covering their elbows and knees when dressing in Qatar to be respectful of the local culture. I visited in May of this year during Ramadan, a religious month for Muslims. One of the perks of visiting during Ramadan is that you practically have the entire city to yourself when practicing Muslims break fast in the evening.

From the moment I arrived at the Hamad International Airport (DOH), I was awestruck by the luxurious terminal and art within them. Located in the airport is ‘Small Lie’ by Kaws, an American artist, a statue that stands at 30-feet-tall. I left the airport and took a 15-minute taxi to the National Museum of Qatar which was unveiled earlier this year by architect Jean Nouvel. Inside is an abundance of cultural art with a wide range of mediums. I recommend going at sunset or sunrise to see the circular architecture at its peak, but make sure to check the hours before going. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, I recommend leaving the city and doing a desert tour. You can do half-day tours to Khor Al Adeid, where the desert meets the sea.

You can’t go to Doha without visiting Souq Waqif, the old marketplace that blends centuries of tradition with the modern world. Souq Waqif is one of the most popular spots in Doha. You can find almost anyone here on a Friday night enjoying hookah, dinner or shopping. I decided to eat dinner at Parisa in Souq Waqif after a friend recommended it and let me tell you, it was AMAZING! The ambiance and setting made me feel like it was all just a Persian dream. There were tile mirrored ceilings and long dining tables surrounded by pure golden opulence. The food was just as incredible as the decor, especially their chicken kebab plate. That’s a day in Doha!
